Beaches

Many people are drawn to the area by the fabulous, mostly sandy beaches which extend for four miles from Highcliffe to Mudeford Sandbank. Steamer Point Beach is next to the Steamer Point Nature Reserve and enjoys views to the Isle of Wight. Highcliffe Beach is good for safe swimming as is Friars Cliff Beach. Or try Mudeford Sandbank, a spit of land that adjoins Hengistbury Head.

Events

There is quite a bit going on in the town around the year. Some of the highlights include a weekly market which has been ongoing since 1149. In May is the week long food and wine festival that includes an international food market that has over 100 stalls. The annual music festival hits on the first weekend of July that caters for a wide variety of musical taste, from Flok to Rock. The annual regatta has been running for over 100 years and takes place in the secend week of August and includes a carnival and fireworks display.

Activities and Attractions

From Mudeford you can join Adventure Voyages and their 9 metre RIB that travels at 30 knots that visit various locations including Brownsea Island and the Needles Lighthouse. Watermans Adventure Park has two areas catering for different age groups, one is toddler friendly, with a variety of traditional and new park toys to explore. If you want your fun wet then head to Christchurch Quay and the Splash Park which has many fratures including paddling pool and water sprays - great for those scorching summer days. For more sedate on water activities the Vintage Ferry Service takes you from Tuckton Tea Gardens to Mudeford Sandbank taking in Wick Ferry and Christchurch Quay on the way. Adventure Wonderland is a great park catering for younger children. We have visited several times and it always go down well and we stay until we are forced out!

If you like a ruin then head to Christchurch Castle, built in the 11th century and added to in later years, it is free to enter. If you want your historical buildings more in tact then Highcliffe Caslte is a maginificent Grade 1 listed mansion dating back to the 1830s with the added benefit of tea rooms serving cream teas and lunches. Priory Church is well worth a visit as well, dating from the 11th century again and is 311ft in length and said to be the longest parish church nave in England. There are guided tours throughout the year but if visiting during the summer then you can access the tower where you can enjoy stunning views across Christchurch and the harbour. Access is free. If you wish to find out about the history of the area then Red House Museum and Gardens is free to enter and is open all year round.
